A massive pile of garbage and debris collapsed at a landfill in the Philippines, burying or trapping workers in low-lying buildings. Officials said on Friday that two people were killed, around a dozen were injured, and 36 others remain missing.

Thirteen people were rescued alive overnight, but one of them later died, authorities said. A second body was discovered later.

Rescue teams were searching for three dozen people still trapped after the mountain of garbage, earth and debris collapsed on them Thursday afternoon in the village of Binaliw in Cebu city, officials and police said.

According to the officials, the dead and missing were all workers in the landfill and waste management facility.

Cebu city Mayor Nestor Archival said in a Facebook post that search and rescue operations were ongoing at the Binaliw landfill, where 110 workers were on site when the accident occurred at 4:17 p.m. on January 8.

Photos shared by the mayor on Facebook showed that several structures at the site, including facilities operated by the landfill operator, were damaged during the collapse.

Archival said disaster response units, police, fire brigades, and the military have been deployed, along with ambulances, fire trucks and lighting towers.

Officials are coordinating with national agencies and landfill management to assess the situation and provide assistance to the families of victims, he said.
