US President Donald Trump said he will meet Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado next week and that he would be honoured to accept the Nobel Prize she has said she wants to share with him.

Donald Trump said Maria Corina Machado was travelling to the United States in the coming days and that he was looking forward to meeting her. He added that he had heard Maria Corina Machado wanted to give him the Nobel Peace Prize and said it would be “a great honour" to receive it.

The White House has not yet provided details of Maria Corina Machado’s visit or clarified what issues are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

Maria Corina Machado, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year, has publicly praised Donald Trump for his role in recent US actions against the Venezuelan government. She said she had not spoken to Donald Trump since October, when her Nobel award was announced, but expressed deep gratitude for what she described as his decisive intervention in Venezuela.

Maria Corina Machado had been in hiding during the final days of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s rule and later appeared in Oslo, where her daughter accepted the Nobel Prize on her behalf. She has since pledged to return to Venezuela and called for fresh elections.

Donald Trump has long spoken openly about his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, frequently claiming credit for resolving or easing multiple international conflicts.

At the same time, Donald Trump has expressed scepticism about Maria Corina Machado’s political standing within Venezuela. Following the US operation that led to Nicolas Maduro’s arrest, Donald Trump said he did not believe Maria Corina Machado had sufficient support inside the country to lead it, despite her insistence that she would win any future election by a landslide.
