US President Donald Trump told British Prime Minister Keir Starmer it was “too late" for Britain to offer military support during a virtual G7 meeting on Wednesday.

Trump mocked Starmer for initially refusing to allow the United States to use British bases for strikes on Iran. After Iran began attacking Gulf states, Starmer later reversed his position and offered the bases for what he described as “defensive" strikes on Iranian missile sites.

However, Trump told the British leader in front of other G7 leaders that he no longer needed the assistance. “You should have proposed it before the war — now it is too late," Trump said, according to officials familiar with the conversation.

The remarks came during a tense G7 discussion about the ongoing war with Iran and its growing global impact. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron joined Starmer in urging Trump not to allow Russia to benefit from the conflict or receive sanctions relief.

Despite those concerns, the US Treasury later announced a one-month waiver on sanctions related to Russian oil shipments already in transit. The move, announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, was aimed at stabilising global energy markets as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices above USD 100 per barrel.

Officials said the waiver would only apply to oil shipments with no connection to Iran and would not significantly benefit the Russian government.

Meanwhile, hours before the G7 discussion, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev met in Florida with Trump advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss the global energy crisis.

Kier Starmer Dials Trump

Earlier, on March 8, Starmer and Trump spoke on a call, after which Trump rejected Starmer’s offer to send aircraft carriers to join wars “already won."

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East."

“That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!," he added.
