In a pointed response to US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that Kyiv had shown “zero gratitude" for American assistance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said Ukraine has never taken global support for granted and will continue fighting for “freedom, dignity and the right to exist."
Zelenskyy’s comments came in an X post that appeared aimed at countering Trump’s statement, made during a televised interaction earlier this week, in which the President accused Ukraine of failing to sufficiently acknowledge the billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid the US has provided since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Trump had said that Ukraine had shown “zero gratitude," adding that he would take a dramatically different approach to negotiations with Russia if elected again.
Without naming Trump directly, Zelenskyy underscored that Ukraine’s survival depends on international solidarity and that gratitude has always been a key part of the country’s diplomatic posture.
“We have thanked our partners not once, not twice, but every single day, publicly, privately, and through our actions on the battlefield," Zelenskyy wrote.
He added that Ukraine’s soldiers were “risking their lives not only for our land but for the security of Europe and for the principles on which the democratic world stands."
The Ukrainian President’s message stressed that Kyiv cannot afford distractions as the war enters yet another difficult phase.
“This is not a moment for political games. This is a moment for unity against aggression," he wrote.
Zelenskyy also reiterated that Ukraine remains committed to a “just peace", but any settlement must protect Ukrainian sovereignty and the country’s territorial integrity.
“We will negotiate when Russia stops attacking us, not before," his post mentioned.
Trump’s original remarks had triggered debate in Washington and across European capitals, with analysts warning that a shift in American policy could have major ramifications on the battlefield.
Zelenskyy, in his message, appeared to acknowledge those concerns, saying the future of Europe’s security architecture was at stake.
“Every partner who stands with Ukraine is investing in global stability," he wrote, adding that the war “did not begin because Ukraine asked for help, it began because Russia chose destruction."
The Ukrainian leader ended his post by saying, “Gratitude is not measured in press statements. It is measured in our resilience, in our sacrifices, and in our unwavering commitment to shared values."
