The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly commended the US President Donald Trump for his decision to classify the ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ as a terrorist organisation, calling the move a necessary step towards strengthening regional and global security.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Netanyahu wrote, “On this occasion, I also want to commend President @realDonaldTrump on his decision to outlaw and designate the ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ organisation as a terrorist organisation. This is an organisation that endangers stability throughout the Middle East and beyond the Middle East."
Israel’s endorsement reflects its long-held stance that the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates pose a direct threat to regional stability, particularly given their influence on extremist groups. The Prime Minister added that Israel has already designated parts of the movement as illegal organisations, “Therefore, the State of Israel has already outlawed part of the organisation, and we are working to complete this action soon."
What we know about ‘Muslim Brotherhood’?
Founded in 1928 in Egypt by Hassan al-Banna, the Muslim Brotherhood began as an Islamist socio-political movement envisioning a caliphate and a society governed by Sharia law. Although it often presents itself as a political or social organisation, the Brotherhood’s ideology has inspired or supported extremist violence across the Middle East.
Several governments accuse the movement of acting as an incubator for radical groups. Certain offshoots or affiliated organisations, including Egyptian Islamic Jihad, have had ideological ties with al-Qaeda. For these reasons, countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Russia have formally designated the Brotherhood as a terrorist group.
The group’s activities have recently come under renewed scrutiny in the United States. Earlier this year, the state of Texas, led by Governor Greg Abbott, declared the Muslim Brotherhood a foreign terrorist organisation in a significant state-level move.
