US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to voluntarily maintain limits on deployed strategic nuclear weapons “sounds like a good idea." The proposal would mirror the 2010 New START treaty, which expires in February, and hinges on the US agreeing to the same limits.
Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said last week that Moscow is still awaiting an official US response to Putin’s offer. If accepted, it would mark a rare point of cooperation amid growing tensions between the two nations, especially following alleged Russian drone incursions into NATO airspace since the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska in August, news agency Reuters reported.
Meanwhile, Putin warned that the US decision to possibly supply Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles could severely damage US-Russia relations.
“This will lead to the destruction of our relations, or at least the positive trends that have emerged in these relations," Putin said in a video clip released on Sunday by Russian state television reporter Pavel Zarubin.
US Vice President JD Vance recently confirmed that Washington is considering Ukraine’s request for the missiles, which have a range of 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) and could reach targets deep within Russian territory, including Moscow. Though it is unclear if a final decision has been made. However, US officials told Reuters that transferring the missiles may not be feasible due to existing military commitments, especially to the US Navy.
The missile debate underscores the broader challenge of balancing deterrence and diplomacy as the conflict in Ukraine drags on.
