Masked rioters waving European Union and Ukrainian flags set fire to chairs and tables outside Georgia’s presidential palace in Tbilisi as police fired tear gas to disperse thousands of anti-government demonstrators.

The violence broke out as protesters, rallying against the ruling Georgian Dream Party, tried to breach security barriers near the palace in the final minutes before polls closed in local elections. Officers in riot gear moved in with tear gas and armoured vehicles to push the crowd back.

Tens of thousands had earlier gathered at Freedom Square, chanting pro-European slogans and accusing the government of betraying Georgia’s Western aspirations. Some opposition leaders called for a “peaceful revolution" to oust the Georgian Dream Party, which critics describe as pro-Russia.

The unrest marks the most violent confrontation in months between the government and opposition supporters, who have held repeated demonstrations since last year’s disputed parliamentary elections.
