The Centre’s new Bill to replace rural job guarantee scheme MGNREGA was at the centre of ruckus in Lok Sabha on Tuesday as the Opposition cornered the government for “weakening" the law, prompting a strong response from the Centre.
Leading the opposition charge was Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who termed the new Bill an attempt to expand the control of the Centre and pass on the financial burden to the states. Criticising the government for its “obsession" with renaming schemes, she said the VB-G RAM G Bill centralises power and undermines the rights previously guaranteed under MGNREGA, which provides legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment to rural households every year.
