The Bangladesh ist Party (BNP), which is set to form the government after the general elections were held in India’s neighbouring country on February 12, has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the oath-taking ceremony of its chariman Tarique Rahman.

The invitation is being viewed as Rahman’s bid to constructively engage with India to strengthen relations between India and Bangladesh.

Cabinet secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid said the newly elected MPs will take the oath on February 17.

According to sources, interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus has invited the heads of government from 13 countries to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new cabinet. So far, the list includes China, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan.

‘LOOK FORWARD TO ENGAGING CONSTRUCTIVELY’

Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulatory message on ‘X’, the BNP said: “Thank you very much. We greatly appreciate your kind acknowledgement of Tarique Rahman’s leadership in securing the BNP’s decisive win in the national elections."

“We look forward to engaging constructively with India to advance our multifaceted relationship, guided by mutual respect, sensitivity to each other’s concerns, and a shared commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in our region," the post added.

Notably, in his first phone call with Rahman after the BNP’s win on February 13, Modi said he looked forward to working with the leader to strengthen ties between the two nations. India’s participation with Bangladesh at any level will be closely watched as it will define and shape the future trajectory of the new government.

Rahman, 60, is set to become the country’s first male head in 35 years after the BNP’s decisive triumph in the elections.
