The possible deployment signals a continued military buildup in the region even as Washington publicly explores diplomatic options with Tehran. Sources told Reuters that between 3,000 and 4,000 soldiers from the rapidly deployable unit, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, are expected to be sent, though specific locations and timelines remain unclear.

Amid US President Donald Trump’s push for a possible deal with Iran to end the ongoing war, the Pentagon is considering deployment of thousands of troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, sources familiar with the matter told news agency Reuters.
The move comes as the conflict, now in its fourth week, continues to escalate tensions and disrupt global markets. While no final decision has been made to deploy US troops inside Iran, officials indicated the reinforcement would strengthen operational readiness for potential future missions.
The latest deployment follows an earlier decision to send additional Marines and naval forces, including those aboard the USS Boxer amphibious assault ship, further expanding the US military presence in the region. Prior to these reinforcements, around 50,000 American troops were already stationed across the Middle East.
The military buildup stands in contrast to Trump’s recent remarks suggesting “productive” engagement with Iran and a possible diplomatic breakthrough. However, Tehran has denied that any such talks have taken place.
US military planners are also weighing options to secure critical strategic points, including the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s Kharg Island, a key oil export hub. The 82nd Airborne Division, known for its ability to deploy within 18 hours, is typically used for rapid-response and high-risk operations.
Despite the preparations, any move involving US ground troops inside Iran would carry significant political risks for Trump, particularly amid low domestic support for the conflict and his earlier promises to avoid new military entanglements in the Middle East.
