Pakistan army says 48 terrorists killed in Balochistan operations

Pakistan's army said on Friday that at least 48 terrorists were killed in a series of operations across Balochistan over the past two to three days. The operations were carried out in Mastung, Quetta, Kalat and Sibi districts, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the Pakistan Army.

The army said the actions were part of a wider anti-terror campaign in the province. It added that caches of ammunition and improvised explosive devices recovered during the operations were destroyed on the spot.

In Mastung district on Friday, security forces acted on intelligence inputs and killed six terrorists in an exchange of fire, the statement said. In another intelligence-based operation in the Shaban area of Quetta, security forces identified four Fitna al Khwarij hideouts and killed 26 terrorists after a gunfight. Fitna al Khawarij is a term used for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan terrorists.

In Kalat district, two terrorists were killed after security forces raided their hideouts, the army said. In the Bhag area of Sibi district on Friday, security forces, working with the local population, foiled an attempt by terrorists to raid a police station. Two terrorists were killed in that operation, according to the statement.

In a separate statement issued on Friday, the army said security forces had killed 12 terrorists belonging to Baloch insurgent groups in Kalat district on Wednesday. It said ammunition and improvised explosive device caches recovered from the site were also destroyed.

The latest operations come as Pakistan's provinces bordering Afghanistan have seen a rise in terror activity, mainly targeting government infrastructure. The army said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan remain the worst-affected provinces, with the latest operations in Balochistan leaving at least 48 terrorists dead in 48 to 72 hours.
