A major crisis is brewing in Pakistan against the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government and the military.

Media reports indicate that the federal government’s top leadership is being detained at Punjab House in Islamabad, with the military preventing meetings between politicians and the government. Notably, vocal politicians such as Khwaja Asif, Isaq Dar, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, too, are missing from the public eye.

This turmoil comes despite warnings from Beijing against provoking Iran. Pakistani politicians have claimed that core investments related to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) have been damaged.

ASIM MUNIR & DONALD TRUMP

Following a secret meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump and a subsequent attack on Iran, speculations have arisen that such actions would not have been possible without the assistance or direction of Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir.

Munir’s covert engagement with U.S. leadership has bypassed civilian oversight, altering Pakistan’s diplomatic relationships with Russia, China, Iran, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Intelligence sources suggest Munir has compromised Pakistan’s long-standing relationship with Iran, leading to instability in the region.

Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, representing Shia-majority regions, has demanded transparency and accountability regarding Munir’s actions.

Similarly, Ali Wazir, a Pashtun from the PTM, has strongly condemned the military’s overreach and Munir’s politicisation of the army. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the PTI leadership also accused Munir of abandoning neutrality.

Journalist Hamid Mir has criticised the push for a Nobel Prize for Trump while he simultaneously attacked Iran, labelling it as an embarrassment for Pakistan.

MILITARY OVERREACH, ARMY POLITICISED: PAKISTAN SNUBS CHINA

Top Indian intelligence sources indicate that Munir has risked confrontation near the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s (CPEC) Gwadar hub, thus snubbing China, Pakistan’s most strategic partner.

“By bypassing the OIC and embarrassing the body with actions against Iran, Munir’s military diplomacy is seen as contrary to the OIC’s public stance against Western aggression towards Muslim countries. Shia politicians and border communities in Pakistan feel betrayed and kept in the dark about these developments," they said.

Under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government appears sidelined, with ministers left to handle the political fallout. Munir is increasingly perceived as unmanageable and acting beyond constitutional limits. His actions have closed doors with Iran, tested China’s patience, and exposed the OIC to criticism, painting a picture of a leader driven by personal ambitions and ego, they added.
