In a move that is likely to have far-reaching consequences in West Asia, Iran retaliated against the US air strikes on nuclear facilities and fired missiles towards the military bases of the United States in Qatar and Iraq on Monday.

Iran launched six missiles towards the US troops in Qatar, Axios reported, citing an Israeli official.

The retaliation came a day after the US bombed three nuclear sites in Iran and marked its entry into the Israel-Iran war. The US stealth B-2 bombers dropped 14 bunker-buster bombs — each weighing 30,000 pounds — on major nuclear enrichment sites in Iran.

Flares are now visible over Qatar’s capital Doha. It is not immediately known if it is the air defence system or missiles.Loud explosions can also be heard.

Several explosions were heard over Qatar’s capital, Doha, witnesses told news agency Reuters. This is reportedly the largest airbase attack by Iran in Qatar.

Iran was mobilising its missile launchers into place for a potential strike on the US forces stationed in the Middle East (West Asia), the Wall Street Journal reported earlier, citing US officials. The Pentagon was tracking a “credible" threat to the US military bases in the region, the US-based newspaper said, citing one of the officials.

The White House and the Department of Defence are aware of the attack and are closely monitoring the potential threats to al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a White House official told Al Arabiya English.

Defence Secretary and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine were in the situation room, monitoring the Iranian retaliatory strikes, CNN reported, citing a White House official.

The US is tracking the missiles fired from Iran towards its military installations in Qatar and Iraq.

What Is Al-Udeid Air Base In Qatar And How Is It Related To The US?

Al-Udeid Air Base is a major US and coalition military base located in Qatar, southwest of the capital city Doha. It serves as the largest US military base in the Middle East and is a key hub for American operations across the region.

The United States Army has maintained a strategic presence in Qatar since the early 1990s, following the Gulf War. As part of broader US efforts to maintain stability and counter regional threats, particularly from Iran and Iraq, Qatar became a key partner in hosting American forces.

The cornerstone of this military relationship is the Al Udeid Air Base, established in 1996 and significantly expanded post-9/11. It serves as the forward headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations across West Asia, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia. At its height, Al Udeid housed over 10,000 US personnel and played a vital role in operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and against ISIS.
