Pakistan’s military on Friday publicly labelled former Prime Minister Imran Khan as “mentally ill” and accused him of crafting a narrative that poses a direct threat to national security.

The remarks were made by Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, during a press conference held shortly after the inauguration of the Chief of Defence Forces Headquarters.

Speaking to reporters, Lt Gen Chaudhry repeatedly criticised Khan, holding up one of the former premier’s tweets as evidence of what he called a deliberate attempt to “build a narrative against the Pakistan Armed Forces”.

“This mentally ill person tweeted to build a narrative against the Pakistan Armed Forces,” the DG ISPR said, adding that Khan’s rhetoric had crossed into the realm of national security. “Imran Khan’s narrative has become a national security threat.”

‘HE THINKS WITHOUT HIM, THERE IS NOTHING’

Without naming him repeatedly, Lt Gen Chaudhry described Khan as an individual driven by personal ambition rather than constitutional obligations.“A person thinks that if it’s not him, then it’s nothing. He has become a threat to national security,” he stated. “He thinks that without me, there is nothing.”

The DG ISPR insisted that no one will be allowed to create a rift between Pakistan’s armed forces and its citizens. “Keep the army out of your politics,” he warned, calling on political actors to respect institutional boundaries.

QUESTIONS RAISED OVER MEETINGS IN CUSTODY

Lt Gen Chaudhry also questioned how Khan, who remains incarcerated, was able to meet individuals and allegedly craft anti-state narratives from prison. “Which law is it under which a prisoner is met, and he crafts a narrative against the state and the armed forces of Pakistan?” he asked.

He claimed that whenever Khan meets anyone, he “sets aside the constitution and the law to create a narrative against the state and the armed forces of Pakistan”.
