California Governor Gavin Newsom stated on Sunday that he will take the Trump administration to court over the deployment of 300 California Guard personnel to Oregon. The announcement came after a federal judge temporarily blocked a separate move by Donald Trump to federalise and deploy 200 Oregon Guard troops to Portland, citing insufficient evidence that recent protests necessitated such action.

"After a federal court blocked his attempt to federalise the Oregon Guard, Donald Trump is deploying 300 California Guard personnel into Oregon," Newsom said in a post on X. "They are on their way there now."

The deployment of California troops to Oregon follows the Saturday night court ruling and raises additional questions about the federal government’s use of state guard forces across state lines.

A federal judge ruled late Saturday that Trump was blocked from sending 200 Oregon Guard troops to Portland until at least October 18, stating there was a lack of evidence justifying the deployment.

Newsom sharply criticised the Trump administration, stating in a separate statement, "This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power. The Trump Administration is unapologetically attacking the rule of law itself."

Newsom also explained that the 300 California Guard members had been placed under federal control months earlier to respond to protests in Los Angeles.

"Trump put the 300 California troops under federal control months ago to respond to protests in Los Angeles. The original circumstances did not warrant the move and had since subsided, Newsom said."
