Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is alive but severely injured, and with communication under tight restrictions, said Indian intelligence.

According to sources, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are mediating Mojtaba Khamenei’s messages during his restricted movement.

The report comes as rumours swirl around Khamenei’s status with US President Donald Trump questioning if he is alive. He said Khamenei is likely still alive “in some form", and may have survived the US-Israel attack on February 28 but suffered serious injuries.

Top intelligence sources told News18 that Khamenei was severely injured and left immobile following the military strikes on February 28, which killed his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While initial rumours suggested otherwise, he survived but his physical condition is said to be critical leading to a highly restricted flow of information about his status as Iran’s supreme leader.

The sources said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has seized control of Mojtaba’s communications due to his physical incapacitation. It has stepped in to mediate all public outreach, releasing carefully curated messages and social media posts on his behalf to maintain a semblance of stability within Iran’s power structure.

They said senior members of the IRGC were the ones to make initial contact with him following the strikes that caused his injuries. It was after this meeting that the military leadership decided to release selected statements attributed to him, based on limited interactions during his recovery.

There is much speculation over the true extent of this health crisis, which has intensified following Mojtaba’s glaring absence from his own inauguration ceremony. Rather than appearing in person to assume the mantle of leadership, the event was marked by the presence of only his photograph that was prominently displayed.  This has fuelled questions over his ability to govern and if he will ever regain the mobility required for such a public role.

The IRGC, sources said, is coordinating all messaging around the supreme leader to manage a “sensitive internal management" of information. This strategy appears designed to prevent panic or further instability during a precarious transition period.

The limited and indirect nature of his outreach reflects a sensitive security situation, which is now firmly managed by Iran’s military elite, sources said. By controlling the narrative and restricting direct access to him, the IRGC is effectively acting as the temporary steward of the Iranian state ensuring that any data regarding his health remains strictly guarded from both domestic and international observers.
