A man in northern Sweden is suspected of helping more than 100 men buy sex with his wife, a prosecutor said on Monday. Under Swedish law, buying sex is illegal, while selling it is not.

The man, in his 60s, was arrested in late October after his wife reported him to the police. He has been in custody since then, according to prosecutor Ida Annerstedt.

“He is suspected of having facilitated, or profited financially from, the sale of the complainant’s sexual services," Annerstedt said.

Annerstedt said the man had been remanded in custody suspected of the crime of “procuring".

She added that police are also examining other possible offences but did not share further details, citing the ongoing investigation. The prosecutor declined to comment on whether the woman, who is in her 50s, was forced into selling sex.

The alleged offences are believed to have taken place between January 2022 and the man’s arrest last year.

Annerstedt said charges are expected to be filed on March 13. Police have identified around 120 people suspected of buying sexual services, though it is unlikely that all will be included in the main case. Separate investigations into the buyers may be launched after the trial concludes.

Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT reported that the man has denied the allegations and had earlier convictions, including for assault and unlawful coercion.
