A Secret Service agent assigned to US Vice President JD Vance was placed on administrative leave after allegedly sharing sensitive security information with a person he believed was a romantic interest, who later turned out to be undercover journalist James O’Keefe.
The agent has been identified as Tomas Escotto, who has served with the US Secret Service for about five years. According to material released by James O’Keefe Media Group, Tomas Escotto was secretly recorded discussing internal security procedures while expressing dissatisfaction with US President Donald Trump, including criticism of his immigration policies and opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The US Secret Service revoked Tomas Escotto’s security clearance, cut off his access to agency systems and facilities and launched a formal investigation into the incident. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the inquiry.
What Information Was Allegedly Shared By Tomas Escotto?
According to the published recordings, Tomas Escotto disclosed details about the US Vice President’s protective formation, including how the security detail physically surrounds him, internal shift changes and advance security planning. He is also alleged to have shared future travel plans of the US Vice President, in some cases days in advance.
The recordings further show Tomas Escotto sending images from aboard Air Force Two while travelling with the US Vice President. In the footage released by O’Keefe Media Group, Tomas Escotto is also heard acknowledging that he had signed a non-disclosure agreement barring him from sharing sensitive information, but nevertheless provided details to someone he believed was a casual romantic contact.
What Secret Service Said On Security Breach?
The US Secret Service confirmed that the agent is under investigation and said it has taken immediate steps to limit any potential damage. US Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said the agency has ordered all personnel to retake mandatory anti-espionage training.
“The US Secret Service has also issued an order for all personnel to retake the agency’s required anti-espionage training in order to ensure employees are aware of the threats posed by individuals aiming to exploit agency employees for information about our protective operations," Matthew Quinn said.
