Pakistan on Monday deported an Indian woman who had remained in the country after the expiry of her visa following a religious visit, escorting her to the Wagah Border for handover.

The woman, identified as Sarabjeet Kaur, had travelled to Pakistan on November 4 last year as part of a Sikh jatha to attend events marking the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith. Her visa was valid until November 13, but she did not return to India after its expiry, prompting Pakistani authorities to initiate deportation proceedings, Pakistani broadcaster Geo News said in a report.

During her stay, Kaur married a Pakistani national, Naseer Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura. She also converted to Islam and adopted the name Noor Fatima prior to the marriage. The couple had been in contact through social media since 2016, Pakistani media outlets claimed.

The Geo News report said that Kaur was brought to the Wagah Border, where she is expected to be handed over after the completion of mandatory procedures, including a formal border parade. It said the deportation process was initiated after her visa expired and she failed to return to India within the permitted duration.

The development comes months after Sarabjeet Kaur’s disappearance triggered serious concern in India’s security establishment.

She was part of a 1,923-member Sikh delegation that travelled to Pakistan to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Parkash Purab. The group returned to India after visiting key gurdwaras across Pakistan, but Kaur did not return with the jatha. Her name was missing from both Pakistan’s exit records and India’s re-entry logs.

Following her disappearance, Indian intelligence agencies began tracking the case, while the Indian mission in Pakistan remained in contact with local authorities to verify documents that surfaced later. These included a purported nikahnama and copies of her passport, accessed by CNN-News18, which claimed she had converted and married a Pakistani man in Sheikhupura.

Sources in India’s intelligence community have described the case as concerning, flagging it as part of what they allege is a broader and systematic pattern of “pilgrim recruitment" involving vulnerable visitors, marriages, and religious conversion. Senior officials told CNN-News18 that such cases raise red flags about coercion, manipulation, and long-term security implications.

Meanwhile, Kaur’s Pakistani legal counsel told Geo News that she could not legally remain in Pakistan under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and would have to return to India before applying afresh for a spouse visa and permanent residence.
