Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday said it has struck two ships in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz today, as the ongoing war in West Asia has disrupted one of the world’s most crucial energy chokepoints and rattled consumers and businesses.
The IRGC announced on Telegram that it had fired at the Liberian-flagged Express Rome and the Thai-flagged Mayuree Naree, saying that both vessels ignored warnings and threats from the IRGC Navy and set off in the strait, MS Now reported.
Earlier today, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that three ships were struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, one of which caused a fire and prompted the crew to evacuate. Although the agency did not name the ships, the description of damage on one of them matched that inflicted on the Mayuree Naree.

The Thai-flagged vessel had departed Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates and was en route to Kandla port in Gujarat when it was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the narrow Gulf shipping lane, triggering an emergency rescue operation.
The Royal Thai Navy confirmed the attack, releasing images showing thick black smoke billowing from the ship’s hull and superstructure, with life rafts visible in the water as crew members evacuated the burning vessel. Twenty crew members were pulled to safety after abandoning ship, while three were reported missing.
Precious Shipping PSL, which owns the vessel, said the ship followed enhanced security precautions and was in contact with the UK maritime agency and other maritime security coordination centres during transit.
Meanwhile, India has condemned the attack on the Thai commercial vessel, noting that “the intensity and lethality of the attacks only seem to be increasing." The External Affairs Ministry noted that Indian citizens have already been among those killed in previous maritime attacks during the conflict.

Shipping broadly has stopped in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all oil and natural gas traded passes, and up to 30% of world fertiliser exports. Iran has vowed to attack ships passing through the strait, and the US has threatened to take control of the waterway.
The US has also received intelligence that Iran has started laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a sharp warning from Trump over “consequences never seen before". The US Central Command said it has destroyed 16 mine-laying vessels.
