An Indian-origin student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has died after a car plunged off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean along Santa Cruz's iconic West Cliff Drive. She was 19 and was preparing to begin her third year at the university.

Alli Renee Singh was identified as the passenger killed in the crash early Thursday near Steamer Lane, which is a well-known surf break along the rugged California coastline. The car was being driven by a male companion when it went over the cliff, according to family members cited by the California Post. The crash happened at around 12:50 AM local time on August 13.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the vehicle plunged into the ocean. The Santa Cruz Fire Department deployed all five of its units, while three units from the Central Fire District, a battalion chief from Scotts Valley Fire and Santa Cruz police also responded.

MALE DRIVER SURVIVES DEADLY CRASH

Rescue swimmers attempted to reach Singh, who was trapped inside the submerged vehicle. The male driver managed to escape and suffered minor injuries, according to the report. Images from the scene showed a red car being pulled from the Pacific by a rescue crane as large waves battered the rocks below. The rescue was particularly challenging because of the location, with the crash occurring along a stretch of coastline known for steep cliffs, powerful surf and hazardous ocean conditions.

Singh's death has devastated her family and friends. She was preparing to return to UC Santa Cruz for the new academic year. Her aunt, Monica Singh-Strohmeier, shared the news on Facebook, writing: "It is with a very sad and heavy heart that I deliver this news to you. My niece, Alli Renee Singh, daughter of Ravneet Mahal and Gian Singh, has been taken to our Lord on the morning of August 13th in a tragic auto accident."

The tragedy also prompted a response from UC Santa Cruz officials after university police were notified that the victim was a student.

"We were heartbroken to learn that the victim was a UC Santa Cruz student. Our deepest condolences go out to the student's family and friends during this difficult time. We are providing support resources to those affected by this tragedy," university spokesman Scott Hernandez-Jason told The Pajaronian.

DANGEROUS CALIFORNIA COASTLINE

West Cliff Drive is one of Santa Cruz's most popular coastal spots. Visitors, surfers and spectators flock to the area throughout the year. Steamer Lane, where the crash occurred, is especially well known for its surf break and sweeping views of the Pacific.

But the coastline can also be dangerous. The steep cliffs and powerful waves make the area challenging for rescue crews. Earlier this year, a powerful wave near Steamer Lane overturned a small boat. Two adults and four children were thrown into the water. Surfers nearby quickly rushed to help and brought the family safely back to shore.
