A 27-year-old Indian national was shot dead in New York City after an altercation with an unidentified man, according to a media report. The victim, Gurdeep Singh, was later declared dead at a hospital, while the suspect fled and no arrests had been made till Saturday morning.

Police were investigating the killing, which took place late on Friday night, as members of the Indian community expressed grief and concern. The North American Punjabi Association urged investigators to establish the exact motive and said the case should not be treated as an isolated incident.

Singh, a resident of Queens, was fatally shot at about 10 pm local time on Friday near Stanley Avenue in the East New York neighbourhood. When police reached the spot, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics took him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, CBS News reported.

A surveillance video obtained by CBS News showed two people fighting in the street, followed by a flash of light believed to be from gunfire. One person then fell to the ground, while the other got into a car and drove away, the report said. Police searched the neighbourhood for evidence till Saturday morning, and the investigation was continuing.

Anthony Santos, who works near the crime scene, told CBS News that the incident left him "shocked" and "afraid". The US-based North American Punjabi Association said on Sunday that Singh had moved to the country more than a decade ago. Its executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said, "Every time a young Punjabi or Sikh person is killed, a family is destroyed. We cannot allow repeated violence to become something the community simply learns to live with." NAPA also urged investigators to establish the exact motive behind the killing and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the probe is over.

The killing of Gurdeep Singh after a late-night altercation in New York remained under investigation, with no arrests made and community groups calling for the motive to be established.
