A fire broke out on late Monday on the roof of a hotel in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone after a suspected drone attacked targeted the US embassy.

A fire broke out on late Monday on the roof of a hotel in Baghdad’s Green Zone after a suspected drone attack targeting the US embassy in the Iraqi capital, according to security officials.
Iraq’s interior ministry said there were no casualties after a “projectile" landed on the roof of the hotel in Baghdad. Two Iraqi security sources told AFP that a drone attack had targeted the US embassy, located in the same area as the al-Rasheed Hotel, inside the heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses diplomatic missions and government institutions.
“The Ministry of Interior announces that Civil Defence teams dealt with, this evening, a projectile that fell on the rooftop of the Rashid Hotel in the capital Baghdad," the ministry said on X.

The luxury hotel also houses several other diplomatic missions. Its street was blocked by a large security deployment, with firefighters and ambulances present, as per reports.
Videos on social media showed a bright explosion followed by fire engulfing parts of the landmark building in Baghdad. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Iraqi authorities have not confirmed the origin or type of the drone used.
The Al-Rasheed Hotel, completed in 1982 in Baghdad’s Green Zone, has hosted international diplomats, foreign journalists, and military personnel operating in the Iraqi capital for decades. After years of instability, the hotel underwent significant renovations and re-established itself as one of Baghdad’s premier destinations.
The strike coincided with a broader wave of attacks on nearby sites, including Baghdad Airport and facilities linked to the US presence, in which at least five people were injured, according to Türkiye Today.
