The central government on Tuesday hit back at Elon Musk-owned social media platform X after it claimed to have received a legal order from the Indian government on 3rd July to block over 2,300 accounts, including those of Reuters and ReutersWorld.

In response to the allegation, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said it did not issue any blocking order against the news agency, and accused X of “unnecessarily exploiting technicalities" and delaying the restoration of access.

The ministry stated that it had no intention of restricting access to any prominent international news channel, including Reuters. It further added that as soon as it became aware of the issue, it promptly reached out to X to request immediate unblocking of the URLs.

“The moment Reuters and ReutersWorld were blocked on X platform in India, immediately the government wrote to ‘X’ to unblock them," the official statement read.

The clarification comes after the Reuters and ReutersWorld accounts were briefly inaccessible on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in India.
