Also, US employers cut 92,000 jobs in February, signalling continued weakness in the labour market, while the unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.4%. The Labour Department reported that hiring slowed compared with January, when businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies added 126,000 positions. Economists had anticipated an increase of 60,000 jobs last month.
West Texas Intermediate futures broke above $89 per barrel. Brent crude traded above $91 per barrel as investors weighed the impact of the US-Iran war on global energy supply. Oil prices hit their highs of the day after President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that there won’t be a deal to end the US-Iran war without an “unconditional surrender” from the Middle Eastern country.
