Bangladesh will cast its ballot on Thursday in a crucial national election, the first since a mass uprising ended the 15-year rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Public expectation is running high that the vote could help reset democratic norms after more than a decade of disputed elections and shrinking political space.

The transition is being overseen by an interim administration led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, which has pledged a fair vote. But the one question that remains is – What next for Yunus?

AFTER BANGLADESH’S FEBRUARY 12 ELECTIONS

Following the general elections on February 12, 2026, Yunus’s primary objective is to facilitate a swift and peaceful transfer of power to the newly elected government. He has consistently maintained that his role as Chief Adviser is that of an interim “guardian of the transition" and has ruled out seeking a permanent political office.

Immediate Next Steps

Appointed in August 2024, Yunus has vowed to hand over responsibility to the elected administration as soon as possible after the poll results are finalised.

A key part of his legacy is the July Charter-2025, which was put to a referendum on election day.

If the “Yes" vote prevails, the next government will be legally bound to implement his reform package, which includes:

Creating a bicameral legislature.Implementing prime ministerial term limits (proposed at two terms or 10 years).Providing constitutional recognition to the 2024 uprising. His administration remains focused on maintaining order through the post-election period, particularly as the Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) and a Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance compete for power.

WHAT ARE YUNUS’S PLANS?

Reports suggest that once the transition is complete, Yunus intends to return to his work at the Yunus Centre and the Grameen Bank, focusing on social business and poverty alleviation.

While Yunus himself has dismissed talk of a potential Presidential role, some political analysts and a proposed ‘ Consensus’ formula have suggested him as a candidate for the Presidency of Bangladesh—a largely ceremonial but prestigious role—to provide stability during the new government’s tenure.

He has already secured significant international trade deals and investments, such as a 2026 trade pact with the U.S. and $2.1 billion in Chinese infrastructure support, which will be managed by the incoming administration.

HOW WILL BANGLADESH REMEMBER YUNUS?

Bangladesh will remember Muhammad Yunus as a pivotal, yet deeply polarising, figure who stepped from global Nobel acclaim into the eye of a revolutionary storm. His legacy is defined by three distinct roles:

1. The ‘Guardian of the Transition’: Yunus is widely viewed as the moral anchor that prevented state collapse after the August 2024 uprising. He is credited with acknowledging ‘Aynaghor’ (secret detention centers) and pursuing legal accountability for Hasina-era officials.

He will be remembered for the July Charter-2025, an ambitious roadmap designed to dismantle “electoral autocracy" through structural reforms like a bicameral parliament and a 10-year limit on Prime Ministerial terms.

2. The Diplomatic & Economic Architect: For many, Yunus was the “Banker to the Poor" who used his international prestige to stabilize a free-falling economy. He secured critical support from the IMF and World Bank, and successfully negotiated a “historic" trade treaty with the U.S. to reduce tariffs. His tenure marked a significant “Eastward shift," strengthening ties with China ($2.1 billion in infrastructure support) and Pakistan while navigating a “nosedive" in relations with India.

3. ‘Mixed Results’: Critics and citizens often point to a gap between his lofty reform goals and the reality on the ground. Despite his efforts, he faced heavy criticism for failing to curb mob justice (nearly 300 deaths recorded by late 2025) and for the continued persecution of religious minorities.

Some sectors of civil society will remember his administration for “adhoc governance" and an inability to confront an entrenched bureaucracy. While inflation eased slightly, high youth unemployment and a struggling manufacturing sector led some to feel the promised “New Bangladesh" remained out of reach.

Ultimately, Yunus’s place in history depends on the success of the February 2026 elections. If the transition leads to lasting democratic stability, he will be hailed as the architect of Bangladesh’s ‘Second Independence’. If the country returns to partisan chaos, his tenure may be viewed as a “missed opportunity" for structural change.
