Two people were killed and eight others critically wounded after a gunman opened fire inside Brown University’s engineering and physics building early on Sunday, prompting a full campus lockdown as the attacker fled the scene. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the eight injured victims were in “critical but stable" condition, while police urged residents to shelter in place as the suspect, described as a man dressed entirely in black, remained at large.
The shooting occurred inside the Barus and Holley building, where multiple exams were scheduled at the time, according to the university. Brown issued an emergency alert at 4:22 pm, warning of an “active shooter near Barus and Holley Engineering" and instructing students to lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden. Local media reported clothing and blood visible on the sidewalk as law enforcement and first responders swarmed the area.
