A gunman opened fire across parts of Midland, Texas, on Friday, killing one person and injuring at least nine others, authorities said. The suspect was later found dead after a standoff with police that lasted several hours.
The shooting began around 8 AM (local time) and triggered a large emergency response as officers rushed to contain the threat. The incident eventually ended near a veterinary hospital, where the suspect was surrounded by police.
Midland police later confirmed that the active shooter situation was over and that the suspect was dead. Authorities did not immediately say how the gunman died.
CHAOTIC SCENES ACROSS MIDLAND
Witnesses described a frightening scene as gunfire rang out across the city.
"It sounded like at least 40 shots were fired," said Andrea Mendias, who works at an auto body shop near the veterinary hospital.
Video recorded by Mendias showed officers emerging from an armoured police vehicle while police robots were deployed during the standoff.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said the situation was still evolving as officers worked to secure the area.
