An Israeli airstrike in Beirut on Tuesday has left one person dead and 21 others injured, marking the first major attack in the city in months since a year-old truce with Hezbollah.

The strike, which targeted what Israel called as a Hezbollah facility, came amid a series of Israeli operations across southern Lebanon. Officials said it was the deadliest attack in the past year since the ceasefire following last year’s Israel-Hezbollah war.

The blast struck a densely populated area in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a district long associated with Hezbollah influence.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a smoking hole in a residential building, shattered windows, and debris scattered across the street. Ambulances and emergency teams rushed to the scene to treat the wounded, while rescue workers searched for survivors.

Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed the preliminary toll of one fatality and 21 injured, with some victims receiving treatment for serious injuries. The identity of the person killed has not yet been released. The News Agency reported that nearby vehicles and buildings were also damaged in the strike.

The Israeli government said the operation targeted Hezbollah’s chief of staff, who it accused of overseeing the group’s rearmament and military activities.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that Israel “will continue to act wherever and whenever necessary" to prevent Hezbollah from regrouping.

The attack follows ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon and Palestinian refugee camps, where Israeli strikes have targeted alleged Hamas positions.

Palestinian factions in Lebanon have recently been under pressure to hand over weapons to the state, while Hezbollah has rejected disarmament demands, citing Israel’s continuing strikes along the border.
