New York Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani faced intense scrutiny from Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles who publicly questioned the legitimacy of his US citizenship, calling for his deportation if it was fraudulently obtained. Zohran Mamdani, who was born in Uganda to Indian parents, immigrated to the United States two decades ago and became a naturalized US citizen in 2018. Since 2020, he has served in the New York State Assembly and recently clinched the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City.

What US Lawmaker Said On Zohran Mamdani’s Citizenship?

Andy Ogles, in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), urged the US Department of Justice to investigate Zohran Mamdani’s naturalization process.

“Bye bye, little muhammad! If you lied on your N-400 naturalization forms, you’re going home," Andy Ogles wrote in one post while in another he labeled Zohran Mamdani a “socialist, communist" and claimed, “Zohran ‘little muhammad’ Mamdani is an antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy the great City of New York. He needs to be DEPORTED. Which is why I am calling for him to be subject to denaturalization proceeding."

The accusations were based on Zohran Mamdani’s earlier career as a rapper, during which he referenced the “Holy Land Five"- individuals associated with the Holy Land Foundation, a Texas-based charity convicted in 2008 of funding Hamas. Zohran Mamdani, in the song, used the line “Free the Holy Land Five / My guys" which merits federal investigation, Andy Ogles argued.

“While I understand that some may raise First Amendment concerns about taking legal action based on expressive conduct, such as rap lyrics, speech alone does not preclude accountability where it reasonably suggests underlying conduct relevant to eligibility of naturalization," Andy Ogles said.

He further claimed that if Zohran Mamdani supported or had affiliations with any group tied to terrorism and failed to disclose this on his Form N-400- the US citizenship application- it may constitute grounds for denaturalization.

“If Mr. Mamdani concealed relevant associations, that concealment may constitute a material misrepresentation sufficient to support denaturalization under federal law," Andy Ogles wrote.

Zohran Mamdani has not issued a public response to the allegations.
