The US authorities on Wednesday reported a shooting in Minneapolis, where federal agents are carrying out a major immigration crackdown.

Several videos shared on the social media platform X showed a heavy presence of federal and local officers, yellow police tape, and multiple vehicles involved in a crash.

The City of Minneapolis confirmed the shooting on X, saying it took place near 34th Street and Portland Avenue. The city added that the presence of federal immigration enforcement agents was “causing chaos in our city and making our community less safe."

We are aware of a shooting involving a federal agent at 34th Street and Portland. We are working to confirm additional information, but what we know is that the presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city and making our community less safe.— City of Minneapolis (@CityMinneapolis) January 7, 2026

It also said that Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has demanded that ICE leave the city and state immediately, adding, “We stand by our immigrant and refugee communities – know that you have our full support."

No further details were immediately available. In the footage, bystanders could be seen blowing whistles and shouting at federal agents, urging them to leave the area.

One video claimed that a woman may have been shot in the face while possibly trying to flee ICE agents in central Minneapolis. Authorities have not yet confirmed this.

The incident comes a day after the US Department of Homeland Security said it had launched an extraordinary immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul. About 2,000 federal agents and officers are expected to take part, with the crackdown partly linked to alleged fraud involving Somali residents.

Ahead of the operation, the Immigration Defense Network, a coalition of groups serving immigrants in Minnesota, held a training session for around 100 volunteers who plan to monitor federal enforcement on the streets.
