The woman who was shot and killed by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday was a poet and had recently shifted to Minnesota. Thirty-seven-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good was shot just a few blocks from her home.

According to her ex-husband, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns for their children, Macklin Good had dropped her six-year-old son at school earlier that morning. She was returning home with her current partner when they came across a group of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers on a snow-covered street in Minneapolis.

Videos shared on social media show an officer approaching her car, demanding that she open the door and pulling at the handle. As the vehicle begins to move forward, another officer standing in front of the car draws his weapon and fires at least two shots at close range. In a separate video recorded after the shooting, a woman can be heard crying near the car, saying, “That’s my wife, I don’t know what to do!" Attempts to reach Macklin Good’s current partner were unsuccessful.

Trump administration officials later described Macklin Good as a domestic terrorist, claiming she tried to ram federal agents with her car. Her ex-husband rejected this account, saying she was not politically active and had never taken part in protests.

“She was a poet and writer and wife and mom," Macklin Good wrote in her social media profiles. She described herself as “experiencing Minneapolis" and shared posts reflecting everyday interests, including tattoos, hairstyles and home decor. One image showed her smiling while holding a young child close to her face.

Born in Colorado, Macklin Good was a US citizen and appeared to have no criminal record apart from a traffic ticket. Her ex-husband described her as a devoted Christian who took part in youth mission trips to Northern Ireland when she was younger. She loved music, sang in a school chorus and studied vocal performance during college.

She later studied creative writing at Old Dominion University and won a writing prize in 2020, according to a post by the university’s English department. She also co-hosted a podcast with her second husband, who died in 2023.

Macklin Good is survived by three children — a daughter and a son aged 15 and 12 from her first marriage, and a six-year-old son from her second. In recent years, she was mostly a stay-at-home mother, though she had earlier worked as a dental assistant and at a credit union.

Her mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the family was informed of the death late on Wednesday morning.

“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known," Ganger said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being."
