Folk singer Maithili Thakur has said she is open to joining politics and “will definitely consider" contesting elections if offered a ticket, in an exclusive conversation with News18.

Speaking to the channel, Thakur said she initially had reservations about entering politics but now feels ready to take up the responsibility.

“I feel good that I am being considered capable of contributing to the region. Nothing has been finalised yet. As part of the program, I am meeting many different leaders," she told CNN-News18.

Thakur, who recently met Union Minister Nityanand Rai, said the timing feels right for her to step forward.

“It felt good to meet Nityanand Rai ji, and I felt that this is the right time. And if a proposal is being offered from their side, I should accept it," she said, adding that “things are happening as per the designs of Ram."

Maithili Thakur on Tuesday indicated her willingness to make her political debut from her hometown Benipatti in Madhubani district.

Thakur recently met with BJP national general secretary and Bihar organisation in-charge Vinod Tawde and Union minister Nityanand Rai, sparking speculation about her contesting the elections.

The folk singer, who was at the Narmada Mahotsav to perform, told reporters that she has a special connection with her hometown and starting her political career from there would teach her a lot.

The assembly polls in Bihar will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, and votes will be counted on November 14.

Asked about her preferred assembly constituency, Maithili said, “There hasn’t been any official announcement yet, but I would like to go to my village area because I have a special connection with it."

“Starting from there will also give me a chance to learn. Meeting people, talking to them…I will understand more if I start from my village," she added.

Responding to a question on the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, the 25-year-old singer said she is ready to contribute “in every possible way" to the country’s development.

Thakur said that during her meeting with Vinod Tawde and Nityanand Rai, discussions were focussed on the future of Bihar and the state’s developmental priorities.

Born in Benipatti in Bihar’s Madhubani district, Thakur comes from a family of musicians. Her father is a noted Maithili musician, and she began her musical journey at the age of 11 in 2011, quickly rising to prominence in the folk and devotional music space.

The Benipatti assembly seat is currently represented by senior BJP leader and former minister Vinod Narayan Jha, who defeated Congress candidate Bhavana Jha by over 30,000 votes in the 2020 elections. The constituency is considered a Brahmin-dominated seat.
