The Israeli military has confirmed it killed senior Hamas commander Raed Saed in a strike on a car in Gaza city on Saturday.

According to Reuters, this was the highest-profile assassination of a senior Hamas figure since a Gaza ceasefire deal came into effect in October.

Who is Raed Saed?

Senior Hamas commander Raed Saed was one of the architects of the October 7, 2023.

On October 7, Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and seized 251 hostages in an attack on southern Israel.

According to BBC, Saed had been regarded as one of the most prominent Qassam commanders and led several brigades during Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israeli communities east of Gaza City.

He allegedly oversaw the manufacturing and operations division within the Qassam Brigades. The division is responsible for developing and producing locally made weapons such as rockets, projectiles, and anti-armor systems.

Previously, he reportedly survived an attempt to arrest him during the siege of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex.

Following the attack

In a statement, Hamas condemned the attack, saying it was a violation of the ceasefire agreement. However, it did not mention whether Saed was hurt and stopped short of threatening retaliation.

According to the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan, Hamas is required to return all 20 living and 28 dead hostages taken in the October 7 attack.

All have been returned except for the remains of an Israeli police officer, Ran Gvili, 24, who is believed to have been killed while fighting Hamas gunmen in Kibbutz Alumim, BBC reported.

The plan envisages Gaza being run by the “temporary transitional governance of a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee," overseen by a “Board of Peace" chaired by Trump.

The US President is scheduled to meet his Israeli counterpart to discuss the plan in Washington on December 29.
