Donald Trump said he has discussed global denuclearisation with Russian and Chinese Presidents, calling the world’s nuclear arsenal excessive.

US President Donald Trump on Friday said he has discussed the possibility of denuclearisation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling the world’s massive nuclear stockpile unnecessary and wasteful.
“I think that denuclearisation would be a great thing. We could blow up the world 150 times. There’s no need for this," Trump said during an address.
“I’ve spoken to President Putin about it, I’ve spoken to President Xi about it, and everybody would like to spend all of that money on other things."
Trump’s remarks came a day after he had hinted at potential trilateral cooperation between the United States, Russia, and China to curb nuclear proliferation.
Speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami on Thursday, he said, “We redid our nuclear, we’re the number one nuclear power, which I hate to admit, because it’s so horrible."
“Russia’s second. China’s a distant third, but they’ll catch us within four or five years. We’re maybe working on a plan to denuclearise, the three of us. We’ll see if that works," he had said.
The statements mark a striking contrast to Trump’s announcement last week, on October 30, when he confirmed the immediate resumption of US nuclear weapons testing after more than three decades, citing Russia’s recent trials of advanced nuclear-capable systems, including the Poseidon underwater drone.
“Denuclearisation would be a tremendous thing," Trump had said before boarding Air Force One at the time, “but with others doing testing, I think it’s appropriate that we do also."
He added that preparations for renewed testing were already underway, saying, “We have test sites. It’ll be announced."
In a subsequent Truth Social post, Trump claimed credit for modernising America’s nuclear arsenal during his first term.
“The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country. This was accomplished, including a complete update and renovation of existing weapons, during my first term in office," he wrote.
“Because of the tremendous destructive power, I hated to do it, but had no choice. Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within five years," he added.
Trump justified his move by pointing to similar actions from other nations, particularly Russia, saying he had directed the Department of War to begin nuclear testing “on an equal basis."
Russia, for its part, recently announced successful tests of its Poseidon nuclear-powered underwater drone, with President Putin calling it a “tremendous success" and saying its capabilities surpass even Russia’s most advanced intercontinental missiles.
The test followed Moscow’s trial of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile and its decision to formally withdraw from a plutonium disposal agreement with the US, further eroding arms control mechanisms.
