As the United States on Sunday joined Israel’s strikes against Iran and targeted three nuclear sites, China condemned the bombing.

In an official statement, Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, said that US attacks on Iran and bombing of nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the IAEA violated the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law.

“China calls on the parties to the conflict, Israel in particular, to reach a ceasefire as soon as possible, ensure the safety of civilians, and start dialogue and negotiation. China stands ready to work with the international community to pool efforts together and uphold justice and work for restoring peace and stability in the Middle East," he added.

This comes as the US targeted Iran’s Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz nuclear sites to destroy the country’s nuclear program as tensions between Israel and Iran escalate.

Confirming the attack, US President Donald Trump said that the US military had carried out a “very successful" attack on three nuclear sites and warned of additional strikes if Iran retaliates.

China, which is a close ally of Iran, is a large importer of Iranian oil.

China has raised serious concern over the escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel, and now the United States, as nearly 45 per cent of China’s oil imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz—a key chokepoint that Tehran has threatened to close. Any disruption in this vital route could severely impact global oil supplies.

Amid rising tensions, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, during which he called for an immediate ceasefire—placing particular emphasis on Israel halting its military operations and attacks on civilians.

Breaking his silence on the ongoing hostilities, Xi stressed that achieving a ceasefire is of urgent importance, adding that force is not a legitimate or effective means of resolving international disputes.
