US forces killed 55 Venezuelan and Cuban military personnel during last weekend’s lightning raid to capture President Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s military said on Tuesday, issuing its first public confirmation of losses as details of the operation continued to emerge from Caracas and Havana.
“Twenty-three of our service members died in Saturday’s attacks by the United States,” Venezuela’s armed forces said in a statement, describing the assault that led to Maduro’s removal from power. The military added that it was still compiling information and has not yet released an official count of civilian casualties.
