Hundreds of US troops filed complaints after military commanders told them that President Donald Trump was “anointed by Jesus" to attack Iran and “cause Armageddon," according to a report by independent journalist Jonathan Larsen.

The complaints, submitted to the non-profit watchdog Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), describe combat-unit commanders framing the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran in explicitly religious terms- citing the Book of Revelation and describing the conflict as part of God’s divine plan.

The disclosures add a deeply unsettling dimension to a war that Trump announced last week, saying the US and Israel had launched a joint operation that struck Iran and killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump has since said he ordered US troops to continue attacking Iran for “four to five weeks," promising “heavy and pinpoint bombing" that would continue “uninterrupted" until the US achieved, in his words, “PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD."

What Troops Were Told

Non-commissioned officers who attended a briefing told the MRFF that a combat-unit commander urged them to tell their troops that the war was “all part of God’s divine plan," specifically referencing passages from the Book of Revelation relating to Armageddon and what he described as the imminent return of Jesus Christ.

The commander also reportedly told troops that Trump had been “anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth."

The complaints span more than 110 submissions about commanders across all branches of the US military, covering more than 40 units across 30 military installations. At least one complainant, an NCO who identified as a Christian and said he could be deployed to Iran at any time, wrote on behalf of 15 troops- including 11 Christians, one Muslim and one Jewish service member.

In his Monday email, the NCO warned that the commander’s remarks would “destroy morale and unit cohesion and are in violation of the oaths we swore to support the Constitution."

MRFF President Mikey Weinstein, an Air Force veteran, said his office had been “inundated" with such complaints since the strikes began. He said the complaints shared a common thread: service members reporting “the unrestricted euphoria of their commanders and command chains as to how this new ‘biblically-sanctioned’ war is clearly the undeniable sign of the expeditious approach of the fundamentalist Christian ‘End Times’ as vividly described in the New Testament Book of Revelation."

Trump’s decision to strike Iran came after breakdown of nuclear negotiations. The operation follows strikes Trump ordered on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, during which he claimed to have eliminated Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The current campaign, Operation Epic Fury, has already killed nearly 800 people in Iran and at least 50 in Lebanon, where Israel has been conducting a simultaneous bombardment of Hezbollah targets.
