US carries out fresh strikes in Iran over weekend
The United States said it carried out "self-defence strikes" on Iranian radar and drone command-and-control sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island over the weekend, marking a fresh escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran despite an ongoing ceasefire.
In a statement, the United States Central Command said the strikes were conducted on Saturday and Sunday in response to what it described as "aggressive Iranian actions", including the shooting down of a US MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters. CENTCOM said US fighter aircraft destroyed Iranian air-defence systems, a ground control station and two one-way attack drones that it claimed posed threats to ships transiting regional waters. It added that no American service members were harmed.
