US deploys Marines, 82nd Airborne troops in West Asia as tensions escalate

As tensions escalate in West Asia, India Today's Pranay Upadhyaya reports on increased United States military deployment in the Middle East. US Marines from the Japanese island of Okinawa, aboard USS Napoli, have been deployed to the region. These are the same forces that recently conducted military exercises with Japanese and South Korean forces in the Indian Ocean region, focusing on capturing island territory. The 82nd Airborne Division has also been deployed in the Central Command Area of Responsibility. The US controls at least 19 military bases in the region, which are being attacked by Iran, prompting this readjustment of forces. The 82nd Airborne Division was previously deployed in January 2020 following Qasem Soleimani's killing in Baghdad and during the Afghanistan withdrawal in August 2021. The military augmentation occurs alongside diplomatic engagement efforts by President Donald Trump, with the US seeking to negotiate from a position of strength while maintaining military readiness.
