The US administration and Ukraine plan to sign a minerals deal that fell through after the publicised Oval Office spat between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last week, according to reports.
Trump had informed his advisers that he intended to announce the agreement during his address to Congress on Tuesday evening, according to three sources, who noted that the deal had not yet been signed and the situation remained fluid.
However, when questioned about the minerals deal on Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News, “There is no signing planned," as reported by a Fox reporter on X.
US To Compromise Tariffs On Canada, Mexico?
US President Donald Trump could announce a plan to compromise on tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico as early as today, according to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Starting Tuesday, Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 20% duty hike on Chinese goods came into effect. In retaliation, the three nations have announced countermeasures against the US, which could slow economic growth and increase costs for Americans still reeling from years of high inflation.
“Now, both the Mexicans and the Canadians were on the phone with me all day today, trying to show that they’ll do better, and the President is listening," Lutnick told Fox Business.
“So I think he’s going to work something out with them. It’s not going to be a pause. But I think he’s going to figure out you do more, and I’ll meet you in the middle somewhere, and we’re going to probably be announcing that tomorrow (Wednesday)," he added.
He further said that the outcome would be somewhere in the middle, squaring off the probability of complete tariff relief for Canada and Mexico.
Meanwhile, Trump threatened on Tuesday to raise tariffs on Canadian goods further to match retaliation by Ottawa, hours after slamming the 25 per cent duties on all products from the United States’ northern neighbour.
“Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S., our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!" Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
It came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced 25 per cent tariffs on US goods in retaliation.
