The Tamil Nadu BJP has strongly criticised noted lyricist and poet Vairamuthu over his recent remarks on Lord Ram, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments and questioning Chief Minister M K Stalin’s silence on the matter.

State BJP president Nainar Nagendran said the comments were “unacceptable" and asked whether the Chief Minister endorsed them. Party spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy called Vairamuthu “a fool" and “someone who has lost his mind," while the party described him as a “repeat offender," recalling past remarks on Andal, a revered Hindu Goddess, which had drawn widespread criticism.

The controversy erupted after Vairamuthu’s speech at an event organised by the Kamban Kazhagam, where he was conferred an award named after the ancient Tamil poet Kambar, author of the Tamil Ramayana. Speaking in the presence of Chief Minister Stalin and former Union Minister S. Jagathrakshagan, Vairamuthu said that after being separated from Sita, Lord Ram lost his mental balance and acted without awareness.

Citing Section 84 of the Indian Penal Code, which states that acts committed in a state of mental unsoundness are not considered crimes, Vairamuthu argued that Kambar, though unaware of the law, understood human nature and absolved Ram of blame. He said this interpretation rendered Ram human while elevating Kambar to a divine status.

The remarks have since sparked a heated political row, with the BJP demanding accountability from the state’s leadership and condemning the poet for statements it says offend religious beliefs.
