A woman in Thailand stunned temple staff when she began moving inside her coffin just moments before being cremated. The incident took place at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a Buddhist temple in Nonthaburi, a province on the outskirts of Bangkok.

A video posted by the temple on Facebook shows the 65-year-old woman lying in a white coffin in the back of a pickup truck.

Staff at the temple were startled as they noticed her arms and head slightly moving. The temple’s general manager, Pairat Soodthoop, told The Associated Press that they were initially puzzled when they heard a faint knocking from the coffin.

#Unbelievable! 😲 A 65-yr-old #Thai woman “came back to life" mins before cremation! Declared dead at home, she was put in a coffin for the temple. But then, staff heard knocking & faint cries from inside! 😱 She’s now in the hospital – no signs of prior respiratory or cardiac… pic.twitter.com/WOpQDadj3n— Shanghai Daily (@shanghaidaily) November 25, 2025

“I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled," Pairat said. “I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin. She must have been knocking for quite some time."

The woman’s brother stated that she had been bedridden for two years, her health deteriorating rapidly. Two days earlier, the family believed she had stopped breathing. Thinking she had passed away, the brother placed her in a coffin and travelled 500 km to a Bangkok hospital, where she had wished to donate her organs. However, the hospital refused to accept her without an official death certificate.

Seeking a free cremation, the brother then approached the temple, but again, they could not proceed without the necessary paperwork. It was while Pairat was explaining how to obtain the death certificate that the temple staff heard the knocking.

The woman was quickly sent to a nearby hospital, where the temple agreed to cover her medical expenses.
