The Trump administration on Thursday unveiled a new healthcare plan that it says will lower prescription drug prices, cut insurance premiums, increase price transparency and hold insurance companies accountable.

In releasing details of what it calls “The Great Healthcare Plan", the White House also urged Congress to pass legislation to lock in US President Donald Trump’s most-favoured-nation drug pricing policy.

The White House shared a video message from Trump alongside the plan’s details. In the video, Trump said he was “thrilled" to announce a plan to make healthcare more affordable for all Americans.

“We’re calling it the Great Health Care Plan," Trump said, adding that it would put people ahead of big corporations and special interests. He said the government would send money directly to individuals, who would then use it to buy their own healthcare.

Trump argued that the plan would hurt large insurance companies while benefiting ordinary Americans. “This proposal locks in the massive discounts on prescription drugs that my administration is achieving through our most favoured nation drug pricing agreement," he said.

Under the policy, Trump claimed, the prices of many medicines would fall sharply, with some drugs seeing cuts of 300, 400 or even 500 percent. He said Americans would no longer pay the highest drug prices in the world, but instead the lowest prices paid by any country.

Trump also called on Congress to complete work started by his administration to turn the policy into law.

The plan also targets insurance premiums. According to Trump, it would end what he described as “government payoffs to big insurance companies" and redirect that money to the public.

A White House press release said the plan would lower drug prices by building on Trump’s earlier actions, reduce insurance premiums by cutting kickbacks, and send money directly to people.

It would also introduce a “Plain English" insurance standard, requiring insurers to clearly show profits and how often they deny care. In addition, any provider or insurer accepting Medicare or Medicaid would be required to clearly display prices and fees.
