US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he plans to hold fresh discussions regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, following the lack of progress at Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Despite earlier confidence in his ability to end the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Trump has grown increasingly frustrated at his administration’s inability to halt the fighting. When he assumed office in January, he had predicted a swift resolution.
Trump said that talks are scheduled in the coming days, news agency Reuters reported.
According to a White House official, a phone call is expected on Thursday between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Earlier in the day, the French presidency said that several European leaders, including Zelenskyy and France’s Emmanuel Macron, would call Trump on Thursday afternoon as part of a broader diplomatic effort.
The Reuters report suggests that the conversation will follow a mostly virtual summit hosted by France, involving around 30 countries, aimed at coordinating security assistance for Ukraine once there is a peace agreement with Russia.
