US President Donald Trump announced that a 25% tariff will be imposed on Indian imports starting August 1, along with an unspecified penalty, citing India’s high tariffs, non-monetary trade barriers and ongoing military and energy ties with Russia.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump wrote, “India is our friend but we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high… and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country."

He went on to criticize India’s continued defense and energy relationship with Russia, saying, “They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!"

Donald Trump concluded his post by declaring, “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST."
