The United States on Thursday imposed fresh sanctions on senior Iranian officials over what it described as a brutal crackdown on protests, with Washington singling out Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council for Security, as a key figure behind the use of force against demonstrators.
In a statement, the US Treasury said Larijani was among the Iranian security officials designated for their role in coordinating the state response to nationwide protests that erupted in December. The sanctions were announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent under the Trump administration.
According to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, Larijani was one of the first senior Iranian leaders to publicly call for violence in response to what US officials described as the legitimate demands of protesters. The department said he oversaw the response to demonstrations on behalf of Iran’s supreme leadership.
