Thousands of travellers were forced to evacuate parts of Miami Airport on Sunday, as authorities sprang into action following reports of a suspicious, unattended piece of luggage in the airport’s South Terminal. The incident came to light at around 6 P.M. (local time) when deputies were alerted regarding an unattended bag in the departures area near Door 21.

As a precautionary measure, passengers and staff in the surrounding area were evacuated immediately, with authorities initiating a thorough inspection of the site.

According to officials, the response was precautionary, with travellers being instructed to leave the terminal quickly and safely. Onlookers said announcements urged people to “move as far away from the building as possible" as security teams entered the terminal to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, Miami Airport acknowledged the disruptions in a post on ‘X’. Concourses H and J are currently experiencing a temporary security screening process at MIA. Travellers may see a brief delay. Thank you for your patience," the airport said in a statement on ‘X’.

In a follow-up statement, the airport stated, “The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious item in MIA’s South Terminal area. The TSA checkpoints for concourses G, H, and J and the surrounding areas have been evacuated and are currently closed. Passengers driving to MIA this evening should give themselves additional time."

Several flights faced delays as security teams engaged in conducting an inspection of the site under established procedures.

Furthermore, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office later gave the all clear, stating that the TSA checkpoints for concourses G, H and J, along with surrounding areas, were reopening after the security sweep was completed.
