Trump reignites US interest in Greenland, citing security concerns, prompting warnings from Greenland and Denmark to respect international law and NATO agreements.

President Donald Trump said the US needs Greenland for national security not for its natural resourses.
Hours after Donald Trump threatened to annex the autonomous Danish territory, Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen warned the US President saying “That’s enough now".
Trump on Sunday said that the United States needs Greenland for national security not for its natural resourses, repeating his long-held view that control of the Arctic island is essential.
The US President said, “We do need Greenland, absolutely," claiming it is surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships. He also suggested that Venezuela may not be the last country to face American intervention.
He said Greenland is vital because of growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic, especially as melting ice opens new shipping routes and military opportunities. “We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months… let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days," he said.
In response, Greenland PM issued a clear warning: “That’s enough now."
“No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation," Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Facebook. “We are open to dialogue. We are open to discussions. But this must happen through the proper channels and with respect for international law."
Greenland lies between North America and Europe and hosts the US Thule Air Base, which plays a key role in missile defence.
According to AFP, former Trump aide Katie Miller, who is also the wife of the president’s most influential adviser, also drew ire by posting an image of Greenland in the colours of the US flag, captioning it “SOON".
Greenland’s Nielsen called Miller’s post “disrespectful", writing on X that “our country is not for sale, and our future is not decided by social media posts".
During the weekend, Danish Prime Minister called on Washington to stop “threatening its historical ally".
“It is absolutely absurd to say that the United States should take control of Greenland," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement, also noting that Denmark, “and thus Greenland", was a NATO member protected by the agreement’s security guarantees, AFP reported.
Last year, Trump said he believed the US would gain control of Greenland, adding that the island’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us".
He first raised the idea of buying Greenland during his first term in 2019, calling US control an “absolute necessity" for international security.
