A 15-year-old boy in Russia has been arrested after a violent knife attack inside a school near Moscow left a 10-year-old student dead and a security guard fatally injured, prompting an armed response by special police units on Tuesday.
The attack unfolded at a secondary school in the Moscow region, where the teenager, wearing a mask and helmet and carrying a knife and pepper spray, turned on students and staff, triggering panic inside classrooms and corridors.
According to reports by the Sun, a 32-year-old security guard, Dmitry Pavlov, attempted to intervene after the teenager threatened a group of students. The guard was allegedly pepper sprayed before being stabbed during the confrontation. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Students fled the building into freezing temperatures as the situation escalated.
Investigators said the attacker chased a 10-year-old boy through the school before killing him inside the building. Russian authorities have not commented publicly on graphic claims circulating online, including allegations that the attack was recorded on the suspect’s phone.
Armed special forces rushed to the campus and stormed the premises after the teenager barricaded himself inside. He was detained without further casualties.
Images circulating on social media showed the suspect being taken into custody wearing a T-shirt with extremist messaging. Authorities have not officially identified the minor, in line with Russian law.
Law enforcement agencies are examining the attacker’s background and possible extremist motivations. Investigators are also reviewing witness accounts that suggest the teenager questioned students about their identities before launching the assault.
The case has sparked fresh concern over school security in Russia, coming amid heightened scrutiny following recent incidents involving violence at educational institutions.
An investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events and any ideological links behind the attack.
